From Polaroo we have made a report with the aim of knowing what has been the evolution of water consumption in Spain in the vacation rental sector and understand how we can improve the management of this supply to be more efficient in the business. A report based on the analysis of more than 1,800 tourist homes and 11,000 digitized invoices for the year 2023.

With this report we provide information on the impact of tourism on water consumption. In 2023, the number of international tourists increased by 18.7% over the previous year, reaching more than 85 million for the first time, which increases the pressure on water resources in a context of increasing drought and desertification.


From the study, the data reveal that the average water consumption in tourist dwellings in the main cities of Spain was 443 liters (111 liters per guest). Data from the hotel sector are provided, showing variations in consumption depending on the category.


In addition, a series of sustainable strategies and practical measures are proposed to be implemented in the vacation rental sector in order to be more efficient in the consumption of water supply.
